Musician Adam Melchor recalls touching childhood bond with Michael B. Jordan before Oscar win.
Melchor has shared a heartwarming story about his childhood friendship with Jordan, shining a human light on the star before his 2026 Academy Awards 2026 Best Actor win for Sinners.
The 29-year-old singer explained that his father worked as vice principal at Newark Arts High School, where a teenage Jordan spent the summer of 2001.
As a child tagging along with his dad, Melchor struck up a bond with “one kid” who quickly became a close friend.
“He sort of took me under his wing,” Moon in the Morning singer said.
“We’d play basketball, walk around – it really meant a lot to me.”
But summer’s end brought a sad farewell, until a trip to the cinema revealed a surprise.
Watching Hardball, Melchor realised that the boy he had spent the summer with was none other than the legendary 39-year-old Creed actor in one of his earliest onscreen roles.
He also reflected on the challenges Jordan faced as a teenager.
“Some of the kids give him a hard time, because they’re pretty jealous,” his father had told him, a reminder that even future superstars can struggle in school.
The story echoes Black Panther star’s viral 2023 moment, when he joked about being called “corny” by a former classmate.
Melchor concluded his video with a playful and heartfelt message: “Congrats to Michael… and if you’re ever around, I’m so down to play basketball again.”
