Chloe Zhao has recently spoken up for the first time about Buffy reboot cancellation at the 2026 Oscars on March 15.

The lauded movie-maker explained Hulu’s decision to cancel the reboot after she was all set to direct and executive produce the revival series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale.

“I had an incredible, incredible time with Sarah [Michelle Gellar], with all the cast and crew doing this,” said Chloe during red carpet at this year’s Oscars on Sunday.

Hamnet director pointed out that the “first and foremost, we see ourselves as the guardians of the original show”.

“Our priority for Sarah and for us has always been to be truthful to the show, to be truthful to our fans,” she told the outlet.

But, Chloe added, “Things happen for a reason, and we keep our hearts open and we welcome the mystery, and what this might lead us to.”

When asked if the director would sell the Buffy project to other distributors, she replied, “Welcome the mystery.”

Meanwhile, Chloe, who was nominated for a best director Academy Award for her work on Hamnet, lost to One Battle After Another’s Paul Thomas Anderson at the Oscars.
