Timothée Chalamet is facing a wave of backlash after suggesting that ballet and opera are art forms people “don’t care about anymore”, and now two outspoken hosts from The View have joined the criticism.

The 30-year-old actor made the remark during a televised town hall discussion about the future of cinema alongside Matthew McConaughey for CNN and Variety.

But his comments quickly sparked outrage among members of the arts community.

During Monday’s episode of the talk show, co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Sunny Hostin openly slammed the Marty Supreme star for what they felt was a dismissive take on traditional performance art.

Sunny, 57, said she found the remarks insulting to the countless performers who dedicate their lives to ballet and opera.

Stressing the physical demands of the craft, she said bluntly: “Ballet is hard.”

She went on to admit she felt “offended and disappointed”, adding she hadn’t realised the Dune actor could come across as “that vapid and that shallow”.

Whoopi, 70, also weighed in and pointed out that Timothée actually comes from a dance family, making the comments even more surprising.

She warned that putting down other art forms can easily backfire.

“You come from a dance family, so when you criticise somebody else’s art form, it doesn’t feel good,” she said, before adding: “Be careful, boy.”

The Oscar-nominated star had been discussing how some actors campaign to keep cinema alive, comparing the debate to art forms such as ballet and opera that rely on continued public support.

Although the Wonka star insisted he meant “all respect” to performers, the backlash spread quickly.
