A24 has put out the first trailer of the highly speculated film, Backrooms, and it appears to have captured netizens’ attention.
The film is an adaptation of Kane Parson’s disturbing YouTube series of the liminal spaces, and is slated for release on May 29.
It stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell and Avan Jogia and is produced by big names like Kori Adelson, Dan Cohen, Chris Ferguson, Dan Levine, Shawn Levy and The Conjuring’s James Wan as producers.
Meanwhile the script is written by Will Soodik and is helmed by the Kane, who created the original viral series and is the youngest director in the independent entertainment industry’s history at 20-years-old.
Internet users took to platforms such as X, formerly Twitter, to express their excitement for the upcoming movie after the eerie trailer went viral.
“OH MY GOOOSSHHH I'M DEF BUYING TICKETS WHEN IT FIRST COMES OUT!!!” one netizen wrote on the platform, as a second added, “If you know the lore behind the back rooms you understand how good this film is about to be.”
A third internet user gave a nod to the origins of Backrooms, commenting, “The internet built a mythology. Hollywood finally noticed.”
The Backrooms is a fictional location originating from a thread on 4Chan, featuring a liminal space aesthetic.
The mythology was expanded when netizens piled on concepts such as “levels” to the rooms as well as hostile creature that live in the spaces.
