Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights had polarized fans from the time the casting was announced, but it seems that the film has not been able to salvage its reputation even with the full release.
The Emily Brontë adaptation had been receiving criticism for the snippets in teasers, costume design and the radical departure from the book and its themes.
Since the release of the highly anticipated film, which stars Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as Catherina Earnshaw and Heathcliff respectively, the mixed reviews have been taking over social media with a majority of them leaning towards the negative.
One internet user wrote on X, “Utterly miscast, poorly written and terribly acted, its only redeeming qualities lie in Linus Sandgren's beautiful cinematography and the somewhat interesting production design,”
They continued, “from a mere aesthetic standpoint, it mostly works, but never enough to hide its complete ineptness as a gothic tale of love and hate.”
Another wrote, “Emerald Fennell, a Sofia Coppola without the maturity, insight or soul, directs WUTHERING HEIGHTS like a comic book, sure, there are some stunning visuals but it's overwhelmingly childish in its need to shock and be hip, Robbie and Elordi nothing more than pretty faces.”
Meanwhile some critics have awarded the Saltburn director’s film two out of five stars, while the others have given it glowing reviews and scores.
