Paul Mescal shared his thoughts on keeping himself away from the social media.

The Irish actor admitted that following his breakout role in 2020, Normal People, the platform became too much for him.

"I had it when Normal People was starting, and I remember being like, 'Oh, if I keep it past this point, I'm f—ked,'" he told in an interview with the British GQ.

The Gladiator II actor added, "It's so hard to avoid being watched and commented about."

He acknowledged that his career path comes from a place of privilege, crediting luck and strong relationships with filmmakers rather than studios.

The Hamnet actor added that while it's worked for him, the same approach may not suit every actor, as it can limit opportunities.

He went on to disagree that the actors need social media to succeed. He finds it unfortunate that studios rely so heavily on online presence.

"We call out this absence of movie stars, and it’s like, Yeah, of course there’s an absence: we see everybody the whole f--king time!," he said.

Taking inspiration from the late movie star Paul Newman, Mescal explained the pint of Newman "being so great is that he’d rock up to the Venice Festival looking unbelievably chic and cool and then he would disappear."

Mescal latest film Hamnet is now running in cinemas, meanwhile his upcoming The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic, where he plays Paul McCartney. It's slated for release on April 7, 2028.
