Jason Bateman and Charli XCX had a conversation about marriage and wanting children and the former’s suggestions to the latter have gone viral for all the wrong reasons.
The Arrested Development actor did not have much context about the Apple singer’s life or her marriage to The 1975 drummer George Daniels in July of 2025.
In a recent episode of the SmartLess podcast, the Ozark actor presumed that The Moment actress wanted to have children and asked her how many she wanted to have.
“I actually don’t really want to have kids,” Charli replied to which co-host Sean Hayes stated “You don’t? Wait, why? I know that’s none of my business…”
Soon after, Jason said, “I mean I guess I’m backing into giving myself a half-assed compliment here, but my wife did not want to have kids, so the story goes. She said once we started going out she thought, ‘OK, I think I can have a kid with this guy.’ So you might find somebody.”
The British singer then revealed that she was married, to which the Golden Globe winner joked that he should read a newspaper one of these days and that Charli would want to have children with her next husband.
Since then, the remark has gone viral on social media, with netizens calling Jason’s insistence “Yikes cringe gross,” on X.
“No man should have a podcast,” another added as some defended the 57-year-old and noted that the exchange wasn’t as awkward as it was being made out to be.
