Ryan Coogler’s Sinners has just earned a major accolade at the Golden Globes, which has reignited the debate about the way it was snubbed by a reputable magazine last year.

The horror thriller won in the cinematic and box office achievement at the ceremony, an achievement that was once cast doubt upon.

In April of 2025, Variety’s reporting of the movie’s global box office debut rubbed a majority of readers the wrong way, since it was worded in a cynical way when talking about the film’s further success.

As a result, the Golden Globe is a massive win that shuts down language containing racial bias, especially after the film amassed $368.2 million in revenue.

Ryan delivered a humble and gratitude filled speech while accepting the accolade, “We don’t always, when we work in the film business, wear tuxedos and get glammed-out. It’s usually a grind.”

“It was an honor on this movie to know that it was getting a theatrical release. We would remind people every day, in the dog days of summer in New Orleans — we would say, ‘Hey, big movie. People are going to see this — big theater,” he continued.

Notably, internet users took to social media to share their excitement over the win and to slam the outlet for theor reporting at the time.

Does 'Sinners' have a great reception?

Yes, Sinners bought in a whopping $71 million in North American movie theaters soon after it came out and the film has also accumulated largely positive reviews from critics and cinema-goers.
