The upcoming Wuthering Heights is nearly a month away from its official release, and it seems that the more details that come to light about the film, the more hate it gets.
Emerald Fennel’s upcoming project was first and foremost slammed for its casting decisions, then for the historical inaccuracies and tonal shift in the fundamentals of Emily Bronte’s eponymous novel that the film is apparently a re-imagining of.
The latest criticism is surrounding the costume design and designer Jacqueline Durran who stated that they are not meant to be historically accurate for the film and are based on the style they like for each individual character.
Margot Robbie’s pictures in a shimmery, flowy, pink dress with a bow raised eyebrows among internet users, since the character she plays, Cathy, is difficult to imagine in the dress in the era the book is set in.
Netizens took to X to react to some of the Barbie actress’s images with one writing, “i don’t really care about historically accurate costume design, but if they wanted to be camp or fashion-y..."
They continued, "i wish there was a cohesion in the vision for that bc with all due respect it’s all over the place.”
“A lot of costumes in period movies are not historically accurate but at least they make sense… This just looks random,” another added, with a third writing, "I think it’s an aesthetic mess."
“They really could have saved themselves and the public a lot of peace had they just claimed this was a film inspired by Wuthering Heights because everything I keep seeing for this film has just been worse and worse,” a fourth said.
Notably, the costume designer Jacqueline Durran has clarified that the vision was not to be historically accurate but to match the style they envisioned for each character.
