Duffman has cracked open his last can and possibly out, leaving fans to raise a final toast to a Simpsons legend.
The Simpsons has quietly retired one of its most recognisable and loudest characters, sending shockwaves through its fanbase.
In the latest episode, Seperance that is a parody of hit sci-fi drama Severance, viewers learned that Duff Beer mascot Duffman has officially lost his job.
The episode reveals that Barry Duffman turns up at the Simpsons’ house in plain clothes, admitting he’s hung up his famous red cape, sunglasses and beer-can belt for good.
According to him, the Duff Corporation has decided the character is “retired forever”, declaring old-school advertising totally outdated.
“Today’s kids can’t even sing the jingles,” he explains, in a brutally honest moment that feels very much of the times.
Although Barry briefly takes up work at soulless firm EOD (Enthusiasm On Demand), by the end of the episode he walks away but doesn’t return to his iconic alter ego.
Instead, Duffman remains firmly in civilian mode, marking what appears to be the end of an era.
For those unfamiliar, Duffman first appeared back in 1997 in season nine’s The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson and quickly became a fan favourite thanks to his booming voice and ridiculous bravado.
Ironically, voice actor Hank Azaria has previously admitted Duffman is one of his least favourite characters to perform, joking in 2020 that the voice “actually hurts” and he dreads recording it.
Azaria, 61, has also shared fears about AI replacing voice actors, insisting that while technology may copy voices, it can never fully replicate the “humanness” behind a performance.
