Kate Winslet has admitted she’s still reeling from the reality of becoming a film director, calling the experience both “thrilling” and almost unbelievable.
The Oscar-winning actress, who recently turned 50, has made her directorial debut with Goodbye June, a deeply personal family drama written alongside Joe Anders, the 22-year-old son of her former husband Sam Mendes.
And despite decades at the top of Hollywood, The Reader actress says stepping behind the camera felt like entering a whole new world.
Speaking on the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Kate confessed she’s “still experiencing the aftershocks” of directing her own film.
“Even hearing it said out loud feels surreal,” she admitted.
“As a woman, making films is hard – even as an actress. Women directors have to fight fiercely to be heard.”
She revealed she’s spent years championing other filmmakers, never quite imagining she’d one day join their ranks.
“Directing is an end-to-end commitment of a year or more. That’s huge,” she said.
The Titanic star also spoke warmly about working with Joe, while stressing that both he and her daughter, actress Mia Threapleton, are forging careers without her help.
Kate added that collaborating creatively with her children has been “very special”, and hinted this may not be her last time in the director’s chair.
