Guillermo del Toro has been left stunned and surprisingly emotional by the extraordinary reaction to his long-awaited Frankenstein film.

The 61-year-old director, who has dreamed of adapting Mary Shelley’s gothic classic for decades, admits he has never experienced anything like the outpouring of love now flooding his inbox.

Speaking candidly, Guillermo revealed that praise from fans and fellow filmmakers alike has arrived in what he describes as a “tidal wave of affection”.

But while the film’s reception has been overwhelmingly positive, the filmmaker has confessed that its release has come at a personal cost.

After years of intense focus, Guillermo says he was hit by a crushing emotional low once the project was complete, describing the feeling as a kind of creative “postpartum depression” that left him struggling to find his next horizon.

Starring Oscar Isaac as the brilliant but dangerously obsessive Baron Victor Frankenstein, the film has also had a deep impact on its cast.

Oscar has admitted he found the role both thrilling and hard to shake, relishing the freedom of playing such a morally unhinged character.

The actor revealed that stepping away from Victor proved more difficult than expected, with the character’s raw energy lingering long after filming wrapped.

To cope, Ex Machina star developed personal rituals on set to prepare himself emotionally and to safely let go at the end of each day.
