Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie has officially begun production on Sunny, a dark thriller directed by Eva Sørhaug (Tokyo Vice, Yellowjackets).
The movie is produced through Gramercy Park Media, A Higher Standard, and Nickel City Pictures. Jolie will both star and produce the film.
Inspired by classic mafia stories, Sunny follows a female gangster determined to protect her sons and herself from a brutal drug kingpin. But when a devastating event shakes her world, she has only hours to plan their permanent escape.
The film’s script, penned by William Day Frank, was developed from a story he conceived with Sørhaug.
Producers alongside Jolie include Nathan Klingher (Gramercy Park Media), Mark Fasano (Nickel City Pictures), and Jeffrey Greenstein (A Higher Standard), with Choice Films involved.
A Higher Standard handles worldwide sales, while WME Independent co-reps domestic distribution.
Nickel City’s Fasano called Jolie “a tour de force,” adding, “People are going to be shocked by what she brings to this riveting character.
This violent world is grounded in survival and family, led by a mother doing everything to protect her two boys.”
Klingher echoed the sentiment, saying Jolie has made the role uniquely her own, crafting a rare, character-driven thriller with meticulous attention to detail.
Sunny promises a high-stakes, adrenaline-fueled showcase for one of Hollywood’s most formidable stars.
