George Clooney has revealed the surprisingly humble way he first met Hollywood royalty Paul Newman, and how the late icon gave him advice that still shapes his life today.
Back in the late ’90s, Clooney was already a household name due to his role as Dr Doug Ross on ER. Newman, meanwhile, was filming Message in a Bottle on the same Warner Bros. lot.
But when the 64-year-old actor rolled up in a golf cart to greet him, the legendary actor Newman apparently had no idea who the rising star was.
The Jay Kelly star told the New York Times that The Color of Money actor was simply “sitting outside smoking a cigarette” when he stopped to say hello.
It wasn’t until crew members kept driving past shouting, “Hey, George!” that Newman realised he was talking to someone famous. “
Bit by bit, he figured out I was successful in the industry in some way,” Clooney joked.
But once Newman caught on, he didn’t hesitate to offer the younger actor a powerful piece of wisdom.
“George, don’t let them keep you at home,” he told him, warning him not to isolate himself just because fame made going out harder.
Amal Clooney's husband says the advice instantly made sense and has stayed with him ever since.
These days, Batman and Robin lead is more focused on family life and hopes his nine-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, don’t follow him into showbiz.
