Matt and Ross Duffer are giving fans a first glimpse into the future of the Stranger Things universe beyond Hawkins.
The iconic twin creators revealed to Deadline that a spinoff has been quietly in the works since Season 4 dropped in summer 2022, and Netflix is finally in the loop.
“We are moving forward with it. Netflix, they finally know what it is. We held it. They were so frustrated,” Matt said. “We just would not tell them. Finn [Wolfhard] guessed what it was. So he was the only one who knew.”
Ross added that Wolfhard’s take on the project may have shifted over time.
“I think he might have forgotten, though, honestly, because last time he brought it up, I was like, ‘That’s not what it is,’” Ross said. “Maybe he was just being coy. I don’t know.”
Back in August, Wolfhard hinted to Variety that the series could feel like a David Lynch–style Twin Peaks, with an anthology twist woven into the Upside Down mythology.
He even speculated a mysterious lab in Russia might be the central hub, with no Hawkins or original Stranger Things characters in sight.
With season 5 set to drop on November 26, fans now have even more reason to keep a close eye on the Stranger Things universe. It looks like Hawkins is just the beginning.
