Prince William appeared to quietly disprove a long-standing claim made by Meghan Markle during a touching encounter on his trip to Brazil this week.
The Prince of Wales, 43, was visiting the iconic Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro as part of his Earthshot Prize engagements when he joined a football training session with children involved in Terra FC, a campaign encouraging young people to fight climate change through sport.
After joining in drills and chatting with the group of local children, William was photographed warmly hugging and shaking hands with each of them.
Fans noted how the prince’s genuine affection contrasted sharply with Meghan’s 2022 Netflix series, in which she recalled that meeting William and Princess Kate had been “formal” and that her tendency to hug people was “jarring” for the royals.
William’s spontaneous warmth appeared to challenge that narrative, with social media lighting up with praise for his down-to-earth nature.
“The Royals do NOT find hugs jarring from genuinely lovely people,” one fan wrote.
Another added: “Prince William is proving once again why he’ll make a compassionate king.”
