Johnny Depp considers Tim Burton “a part of his family” because of a major sacrifice the filmmaker made during filming for Depp’s daughter, Lily-Rose.
In Tara Wood’s latest four-part docuseries, Tim Burton: Life in the Line, Depp reflected on his long-standing friendship with the visionary director.
“Tim made huge sacrifices on Sweeney,” Depp said in episode three of the series.
He explained that his daughter, Lily-Rose, who was only seven at the time, had been diagnosed with a form of kidney failure during the production of the 2007 film Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
“Her kidneys were shutting down,” Depp recalled. “She had contracted E. coli. They put her on dialysis.”
The Pirates of the Caribbean frontman shared that he had called Burton to tell him he would have to drop out of the movie because of his daughter’s health condition.
“And [Burton] went, ‘No. Don’t even talk like that, man. Whatever we have to do, we’ll do. She’s going to be fine. We’ll make it work,’” Depp recounted in the documentary.
Depp shares Lily-Rose, 26, and son Jack, 23, with ex-partner Vanessa Paradis.
While their daughter was hospitalized, Depp and Paradis stayed with her for “a good three, three and a half weeks,” the Golden Globe–winning actor revealed in the docuseries.
“Tim, of course, being Tim, came by the day after I called and brought flowers, the great uncle and godfather that he is,” he added. “Pretty special. Very lucky.”
