A royal expert has identified the moment Prince Harry’s long-standing distrust of the media reportedly began, shortly after his first public appearance with Meghan Markle in 2017.

According to commentator Phil Dampier, the turning point came when Harry released an extraordinary statement condemning “racial overtones” in media coverage following the couple’s debut at the Invictus Games in Toronto.

The statement accused the press of subjecting Meghan to “a wave of abuse and harassment,” while highlighting Harry’s “deep disappointment” over his inability to protect her.

Speaking on The Sun’s Royal Exclusive Show, Dampier admitted he was “completely and utterly shocked” by the move.

“Looking back, there were one or two unpleasant remarks,” he said, “but 99 percent of the coverage was positive. I just couldn’t believe it when he started complaining to the press, it showed early signs of paranoia.”

Dampier described the statement as a “very bad beginning” for Harry’s relationship with the British media, noting that Meghan initially appeared “a breath of fresh air.”
