‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ director reveals future of franchise

Despite its thunderous opening at the box office, The Conjuring: Last Rites director Michael Chaves has confirmed the franchise's future has been limited.

Recently, in an interview with ComicBook, director Chaves said that this is the last film in the franchise.

"It is done,” the director said. “This is the final chapter – that’s why we called it Last Rites. It’s the last one. There’s no other Conjuring movies. It is absolutely the end."

The announcement stunned fans, especially since the film continues to dominate the box office, marking one of the biggest openings in franchise history.

Launching over a decade ago, The Conjuring became a global phenomenon, drawing inspiration from the real-life paranormal investigations of Ed and Lorraine Warren, portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga.

Each installment dove into one of the couple’s harrowing encounters with dark forces, spawning a cinematic universe of spin-offs like Annabelle and The Nun.

With a combined worldwide gross exceeding $2 billion, the franchise cemented itself as one of horror’s most profitable.

The Conjuring: Last Rites alone opened to an impressive $83 million, though opinions remain split on whether it serves as a fitting farewell.

Currently, the film holds a 59% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to the 2013 original’s 86%, while The Conjuring 3 earned 56%.

While reviews call it a “touching finale” filled with “solid scares,” some critics argue it leans too heavily on familiar tropes.

Still, even as Chaves insists this is the end, the massive success of the Conjuring universe leaves the door slightly open, with the potential for future spin-offs or reimaginings somewhere down the road.
