Jennifer Lopez and Diego Luna seamlessly embody their characters in their new film, and even the director, Bill Condon, is a fan of their chemistry.

On Monday, October 6, Condon spoke to PEOPLE during the Kiss of the Spider Woman New York City premiere, reflecting on Lopez and Luna's “immediate” bond.

“Diego came into this as a non-dancer, and he's a great actor ... but he shared his insecurity with Jennifer, and she gave him a wonderful note,” Condon said.

Unlike Luna, Lopez’s journey began with dance, starting in school musicals, then TV specials, and later as a Fly Girl on In Living Color, long before her rise as a global pop star.

Condon further revealed the duo’s on-screen synergy, saying, “You just saw her take him under her wing, and then slowly, as the movie progressed, they would spend more time together talking about stuff, and it was beautiful to watch.”

An adaptation of the 1993 Broadway musical, Kiss of the Spider Woman centers on two inmates in a repressive South American prison, a Marxist revolutionary (Luna) and a gay window dresser jailed for “immoral behavior” (Tonatiuh).

To cope with their harsh reality, the pair escapes into a vivid fantasy about a glamorous Hollywood musical starring the fictional screen siren Ingrid Luna (Lopez).

Kiss of the Spider Woman is now in theatres.
