Angelina Jolie makes rare comment on major surgery

American actress Angelina Jolie has opened up about the surgery she received.

The 50-year-old star underwent a double mastectomy and ovary removal after the death of her mother.

The actress decided to get the surgery after she learned that she carries the BRCA gene mutation, which heightens breast and ovarian cancer risks.

In conversation with Hello! Magazine, the actress opened up about her her mother and grandmother’s struggles with the cancer influenced her decision.

“I did choose to have that (surgery) because I lost my mother and my grandmother very young.”, she said.

Angelina’s mother, Marcheline Bertrand, passed away in 2007 at the age of 56 from breast and ovarian cancer.

She further explained, “I have the BRCA gene, so I chose to have a double mastectomy a decade ago. And then I've also had my ovaries removed, because that's what took my mother.”

The Hollywood icon said she is absolutely comfortable with her surgery and every woman should make her decision by herself.

“Those are my choices. I don't say everybody should do it that way, but it's important to have the choice. And I don't regret it.”

According to her, she faced an 87 percent risk of developing breast cancer and a 50 percent chance of ovarian cancer.
