Taylor Swift’s well-loved and largely uncontroversial image appears to be in danger as the internet is turning against her because of The Life of a Showgirl, and now for unjustly copyright claiming a YouTuber.
The Fate of Ophelia singer’s team flagged a video made by live streamer 'MoistCr1TiKaL', whose real name is Charles Christopher White Jr., for his very first commentary video on the global popstar.
In the video that got claimed, Charlie talked about the You Need to Calm Down singer’s twelfth studio album, its poor reception among her hardcore fans and the extensive number of variants.
The snippet that got flagged however, was from when the 31-year-old recited a few lyrics off of the song Wood.
The complaint noted that the YouTuber would be sharing the revenue made off of the video with Taylor, and that the video was claimed for the using of the copyrighted melody.
Charlie emphasised in the video about the claim that he “didn’t sing it. It’s not like I gave an acapella version, I just said a couple of the lyrics cause they were so silly.”
“I just found this so fascinating, that now we split revenue on that video because I said some of the lines, again I didn’t even sing it,” he added before reciting the lyrics with a remix this time.
Charlie rightfully added that he did not use instrumentals, do a cover or anything even remotely similar, meanwhile some internet users pointed out that he didn’t even use Taylor’s content to flash the lyrics on the screen.
Notably, the claim was overturned when he fought back but it has given way to a larger debate about the wealthiest female musician, her strictness and efforts to monetize things as much as possible.
Taylor has released 27 physical variants of The Life of a Showgirl, which has been heavily critiqued by a majority of netizens.
