Dwayne Johnson’s latest film, The Smashing Machine, might’ve tanked at the box office, but The Rock isn’t losing sleep over it.
The A24 drama, directed by Benny Safdie, opened to just $5.9 million domestically, the lowest debut of Johnson’s career, even below his 2010 film Faster.
Taking to Instagram, Johnson shared a heartfelt message, saying, “You can’t control box office results, but you can control your performance and your commitment to disappear into a role.” He went on to thank Safdie, calling him a “brother” who changed his life.
Based on the real story of MMA legend Mark Kerr, the film stars Johnson as the two-time UFC heavyweight champion, with Emily Blunt playing his wife, Dawn Staples.
The movie explores the fighter’s turbulent journey through fame, addiction, and personal chaos.
Despite its weak financial start, The Smashing Machine has been critically acclaimed, especially for Johnson’s transformative performance — one that’s already drawing Oscar buzz.
Safdie even won the Best Director award at the Venice Film Festival, proving the film’s artistic punch still landed hard.
Produced by A24 for around $50 million, the film continues its run in theaters nationwide, and while its box office might’ve taken a hit, Johnson’s powerful performance has undeniably cemented his dramatic credibility.
