Prince Williams secret role in cocaine bust shocks royal fans

Prince William, known for his royal duties, picture-perfect family and polished appearances, was once at the centre of a major international drug bust operation.

Back in 2008, just four days into his Royal Navy deployment, the Prince of Wales played a real-life action hero role in the Atlantic.

While flying in a Lynx helicopter off the HMS Iron Duke, William and his five crew-mates intercepted a high-speed vessel carrying a mind-blowing 900kg of cocaine, valued at £40 million.

The operation took place north-east of Barbados, with intel suggesting the smugglers were transporting drugs to West Africa or Europe.

Acting fast, the US Coast Guard, on board the British ship, stormed the vessel and made the seizure, with Prince William in the skies helping locate the target.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the future king’s involvement was no stunt.

He was actively part of the surveillance and tactical crew, flying above as the dramatic bust went down.

“This is a fantastic start to HMS Iron Duke’s North Atlantic deployment,” said Commander Mark Newland at the time.

“To have had a direct impact on the flow of cocaine into Europe just four days after we arrived… shows the benefit the Royal Navy can have in counter-drug operations.”

Years later, the story resurfaced in a 2020 Remembrance Day video call, where a fellow Navy man jokingly compared a recent drug bust to William’s.

The Prince responded with a cheeky grin: "I wasn't going to bring that up… but I’m glad it’s still being talked about."

While William was reportedly considered for frontline duty, concerns about his safety (as second in line to the throne) meant he was placed in less risky roles.
