Queen Elizabeth II reportedly predicted that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s demands to serve the monarchy while living in America would “end in disaster,” according to royal insiders.
When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back from royal duties in 2020, they proposed a “half in, half out” model, aiming to be financially independent while still representing the Crown.
The Queen shut down the idea, fearing it would blur royal boundaries and open doors to commercial conflicts.
“Her Late Majesty was nobody’s fool,” a royal source told The Daily Mail. “She knew it wouldn’t end well.”
Concerns at the time included the possibility that the Sussexes could be paid large sums for commercial endorsements, a move deemed inappropriate for active royals.
Ultimately, Queen Elizabeth allowed the couple to step back completely, removing their official duties and public funding, but allowing them to keep their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles, minus their HRH status.
Despite the split, the Queen’s 2020 statement expressed love for Harry, Meghan, and Archie, calling them “much loved” family members and offering her support for their future.
