Mariah Carey, who is known for using whistle register while singing, backed a historic win at the 2025 BET Awards on Monday, June 9.
The 56-year-old songstress has been officially recognised as she received her first ever BET Award in the category Ultimate Icon.
Mariah presented an emotional speech after accepting the award, gushing: “it’s incredible to be here alongside Kirk Franklin, Jamie Foxx and Snoop, I love you guys. Congratulations.”

The Billboard Icon Award winner spilled the secret of being distinguished: “My extraness, my fabulousness, my and yes, my success and my iconiceness.”
She encouraged everyone “out there to believe in yourself. Love and respect yourself. Be a diva, be a boss, be anything you wanna be.”
Mariah added: “But be iconic while you’re doing it.”
The songstress was noticeably missing from the red carpet but later put up a dramatic performance on her new lead track from upcoming 16th album Type Dangerous.
She sported a golden short dress with matching pair of heels.
The Yes, and? crooner has been vocal about her struggles with bipolar disorder, which started in 2001 after she was admitted to hospital due to a breakdown.
