Harry Potter franchise star Tom Felton is reprising his iconic role as Draco Malfoy for his debut in the Broadway stage adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

During his appearance at the 2025 Tony Awards on Sunday, June 8, Felton spoke to Variety, where he was asked whether J.K. Rowling’s anti-transgender controversy had impacted his work.

“No, I can't say it does,” Felton said candidly. “I'm not really that attuned.”

“The only thing I always remind myself of is that I've been lucky enough to travel the world. Here I am in New York,” he continued. “And I have not seen anything bring the world together more than Potter, and she's responsible for that. So I'm incredibly grateful.”

The 37-year-old actor will be making his Broadway debut in a limited run starting November 11, lasting for 19 weeks.

The play, written by Jack Thorne, continues the story from Rowling’s seventh book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, set 19 years later.

When asked about returning to such an iconic role, Felton spoke highly of the Harry Potter fandom.

“I think we all thought the wizarding world would slowly…” Felton said, “that the fandom flame might douse over the years, but clearly it's not.”

Felton also compared the play to the film process, calling it “most exciting” to perform live.

“It took nine months, more or less, to shoot a film,” Felton shared with Variety. “And this is all compact. This is all reimagined into a very lovely, new, tight story. And I get to be a dad, which has been fun.”
