Grammy-winning pop singer Miley Cyrus famously played a fictional pop star character in the Disney show Hannah Montana, which ran for four seasons from 2006 to 2011.

Cyrus debuted with the Hannah Montana role who was a typical teenager who secretly led a double life as a famous pop star.

However, although Cyrus sang a long list of songs on the show, she was not allowed to perform them after the series ended.

During her appearance on the Every Single Album podcast, the 32-year-old singer and actress revealed the reason she can now perform those songs.

“After I left Disney, I wasn't allowed to perform any of the Hannah Montana music,” Cyrus said. “It’s not like I wanted to. I mean, performing ‘The Best of Both Worlds’ between ‘We Can’t Stop’ and ‘Wrecking Ball’ wouldn’t have really made sense.”

Cyrus further explained that it was saddening for her to be unable to sing the songs originally recorded in her own voice and likeness.

“But after being inducted as a Disney Legend, I was given permission to perform those songs in the future, which is pretty cool,” added the singer, referring to the latest award she received.

The hit series also featured Cyrus’ real-life dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, as her on-screen father. Other stars from the show include Jason Earles as Hannah’s older brother, and Emily Osment and Mitchel Musso, who played her best friends.

The Flowers hitmaker received the Disney Legend award at the D23 Expo in Anaheim on August 11, 2024—making her the youngest person ever to earn the title.
