Billy Joel's 1st wife speaks up on marriage 43 years after divorce

Music icon Billy Joel’s first wife, Elizabeth Weber has spoken up about their relationship and divorce for the first time in 43 years in Billy Joel: And So It Goes.

The two part documentary series has Steve Cohen as the executive producer, and premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 4.

At the premiere, Weber spoke to People about choosing to appear on the series, "It was great then, it's great whenever I think about it, and it's great now.”

Being directed by Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin, it marks the first time that she has ever spoken up about their relationship, and their marriage of nine years.

"I love Steve and I worked with him, and he's a close friend of mine...but I thought, 'Wait a second. I have a really nice life. I have a lot of privacy,'" she added.

About how she decided to join, Weber explained, "Susan approached me in a very personal way, and it resonated with me, and Billy licensed the music, so I knew that there would be good music. So it felt right — and it still does."

Cohen insisted that her presence was integral for the docuseries, "Elizabeth and I have a friendship that has lasted since we first met. She was there at the very beginning when I got hired, and... I will tell you, there was reluctance in the beginning because she's been out of the public eye and she's been maligned incredibly in the blogosphere."

Joel himself did not attend the premiere of the series since he cancelled all his tour dates after revealing the diagnosis of his rare brain condition.
