American actor Ralph Macchio, best known for his iconic role as Daniel LaRusso, has reprised his character for four decades in the Karate Kid movies, its sequel, and Cobra Kai.
Macchio first debuted his momentous role in 1984 as an underdog teen, Daniel, and then extended the legacy through the movie’s further instalments and Netflix’s Cobra Kai.
Now, the Hollywood mainstay returns on the big screen alongside martial arts legend Jackie Chan for the new Karate Kid: Legends movie.
The story of the latest movie revolves around a Chinese teenager, Li Fong, portrayed by Ben Wang, who moves to New York from Beijing with his mother after his older brother’s death a year ago.
With the Karate Kid saga spanning more than 40 years, Ralph Macchio reflects on what the future holds for Daniel LaRusso.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the interviewer asked if this is the last time people are seeing Daniel.
"Why not keep the party going as long as it can be rooted in some form of genuine truth?" said Macchio, reflecting on the longevity of his character.
“Might I do my Gran Torino version?” Macchio stated. “Listen, I hope the movie does well. I want it to be the next stage of other chapters, and I’d love there to be a Cobra Kai movie in two years from now as well.”
The 1980s film icon added that if he were asked a similar question back in 1995, he would have denied it instantly.
“Listen, if you came to me in 1995,” Macchio said, “and said, 'You’re going to play Daniel LaRusso again,’ I would say, ‘It’s never going to happen.’ So, never say never. Never say never.”
