Christopher McQuarrie has plot ready for Top Gun 3

Academy Award-winning screenwriter and legendary director Christopher McQuarrie is already brainstorming a new sequel to his hit action movie, Top Gun.

Top Gun 3 might be McQuarrie's next project with Mission: Impossible franchise star Tom Cruise, and might release really soon.

While talking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast, McQuarrie, the producer and co-writer of Top Gun: Maverick, shared that he had already planned the story for Top Gun 3.

When the host asked if the next sequel was “harder to crack” than the previous movie, the director responded, “No, it’s already in the bag.”

The master of action-thriller storytelling, McQuarrie, admitted that he thought it would be hard to cook the plot and revealed all the conversations he had with Ehren Kruger.

“It wasn’t hard,” McQuarrie said. “I thought it would be, and that’s a good place to go from as you walk into the room going, ‘Come on, what are we going to do?’ And Ehren Kruger pitched something and I went, ‘Mhm actually,’ and we had one conversation about it and the framework is there. So, no, it’s not hard to crack. The truth of the matter is, none of these are hard to crack.”

McQuarrie explained that exceptional filmmaking is revealed while you’re bringing the story into action. He said it’s not about the action, intensity, scale, or even the complex engineering behind the stunts.

“It’s the emotion,” he emphasised, on what truly defines a great film.
