Netflix has once again beaten the competition to secure the rights to a highly sought-after masterpiece.

The streaming giant has reportedly acquired the distribution rights to Richard Linklater's Nouvelle Vague.

The movie premiered in competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and pays tribute to Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 classic Breathless, which is widely regarded as one of cinema’s greatest masterpieces.

The film features French actor Guillaume Marbeck as Godard alongside Zoey Deutch, Adrien Rouyard and Aubry Dullin

Deadline reports that the deal was finalised for $4 million, setting a record for the largest domestic sale of a French-language film.

It is worth noting that Nouvelle Vague’s theatrical release beyond the required two-week cinema window for awards eligibility is not guaranteed because it was bought by a streaming service.

The motion picture received a long standing ovation at its Cannes premiere and was showered with praise from the likes of Quentin Tarantino.

Who is Richard Linklater?

Born in Houston, Texas, filmmaker Richard Linklater is known for directing cult classics like Dazed and Confused (1993) and 2006’s A Scanner Darkly, which starred Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr. and Woody Harrelson.
