Kali Uchis sat down for an interview with Variety where she opened up about her new album, Sincerely,.
Admitting that she wouldn't be revealing everything, the singer said, “When I was young, and especially when I was just starting out in this industry, I was more open to share personal details because I was naive, and I didn’t realize the more people knew about me, the more they had the opportunity to hurt me.”
Reminiscing on the moment she found out she was pregnant, she explained, “I wrote the song ‘Heaven Knows’ maybe a month after I found out I was pregnant. That was the first song that I wrote, and somehow in it, I wrote [the lyric], ‘Look into the clouds, see a smiling face, and it gives me hope.’ It’s almost like I wrote the music that I needed to heal before I even knew what would transpire.”
Uchis reflected on her place in the music industry, remarking, “I think it’s hard for people to wrap their head around the music I make. Most of my time in this industry has felt like an uphill battle, and it would be a lot easier for me to just be agreeable and do what I have to do to become more mainstream and marketable.”
Taking the more difficult route, the singer admitted, “I don’t mind it. My idea of success is to be able to say that I’m doing something no one else is doing and nobody else can do. And I love to be able to inspire other artists who are also bicultural to express themselves freely, without feeling the need to over-explain themselves.”
Concluding her thoughts about Sincerely, Uchis said, “I think putting this [album] out into the world will also open a chapter for me, personally. o be able to share it with the world will hopefully bring me a new sense of peace.”
