Tom Cruise was promoting the final film in the 'Mission Impossible' franchise with co-stars Simon Pegg, Hayley Atwell and director Christopher McQuarrie when a reporter attempted to ask the stars a controversial question.

The press conference, which was being held in Seoul, Korea, had a momentary setback, as an attendee referenced President Donald Trump’s tariffs on international films, only to be quickly shot down by Cruise.

As per a translator at the event, the reporter began, “I’d like to ask this question to anybody who’s up for it. I watched this film and I saw that it was filmed in many different locations around the world, including Africa, of course, we all are aware of the tariffs that President Trump has been imposing on overseas productions and films.”

They went on to ask, “So, is this particular movie under that tariff? And how much of the film was shot overseas?”

Cruise, apparently “up for” answering the question stated, “We’d rather answer questions about the movie. Thank you,” to a moderator at the conference, without allowing his voice to be amplified by the mic.

The moderator considered the American Made star’s response to be “fair enough” allowing the stars to move on from the question.

For the unversed, Trump announced the imposition of a 100% tariff on movies produced outside of the United States.

Did the Trump administration face backlash over the foreign film tariff?

Yes, the proposal of the tariffs faced nationwide and overseas backlash for the foreign-film production decision.
