The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Thunderbolts has been out for almost a week now, and with several groundbreaking moments, Yelena Belova’s free-fall jump became a historic record.
The Oscar-nominated actor, Florence Pugh, jumped off the 2,227-foot Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur, the second-tallest building in the world. After performing the heroic skyscraper stunt victoriously, Pugh got listed in the Guinness World Record books.
Though the blockbusting wasn’t merely a free fall, it was emotionally choreographed with heavy collaboration between Florence Pugh and the stunt double, Heidi Moneymaker’s team.
On 8th May, Thursday, Pugh posted rehearsal videos of the stunt where she stood on a mock tower created from stacked shipping containers, topped with a custom metal scaffolding rig.
The rig was to imitate the real jump from Malaysia’s Merdeka 118. The whole set was fully equipped with harnesses, safety pads, and a stunt team to calculate real-world win tension.
Everything was formerly designed to prep her body and mind before she dived into the air for the record-breaking leap.
“As you all have probably heard by now I really fought for the opportunity for us to do this stunt.” Pugh added the caption to her Instagram post, “Of course, there’s the selfish reasons like, 'omg this would be amazing to do and pull off’”
Though Pugh disclosed that she knew this stunt would be the opening and set the tone for the movie, “powerful and impressive”
So, the team of Heidi Moneymaker joined Pugh to rehear the move, and they calculated if she would fall with two feet or a single foot.
After filming and practising it, Pugh said, she wanted it to “look delicate and beautiful, like the beginning of an arabesque. Or a swan dive.”
Moreover, the stunt queen, Pugh, was trained for failure. She became familiar with the sense of falling and was “mentally and physically” prepared if something went wrong, on how she’d restore herself.
Finally, she was grateful to the stunt coordinator and the team who made Malaysia possible for her.
