The Academy Awards, that recognises the artistic merit in filmmaking, have stricken their guidelines for the forthcoming award season.

The voting period for nominations will begin on January 12 and will end after four days on January 16. The annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon will finalise the nominees on January 22.

The final step to selecting winners will run from February 26, through March 5.

From all the changes, the most significant are the revised voting requirements, the addition of an Achievement in Casting and elucidated direction on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI).

However, a new condition is raising eyebrows which requires the members to watch all the nominated movies of a category to select one of them. The issue of verifying compliance to the rule still remains.

The Academy associates will be provided access to the final round ballots of categories once they confirm they have completely viewed all the contesting films. This viewing activity will be observed by the organisation.

In Oscars’ history, Achievement in Casting will recognise the partnership between the filmmakers, casting agent and producers in grouping a motion picture’s ensemble.

Another allocate for best cinematography has also been added to the selection process.

What is the rule confirmed by the Academy on AI?

The formal instruction on AI in filming state that: “With regard to Generative Artificial Intelligence and other digital tools used in the making of the film, the tools neither help nor harm the chances of achieving a nomination.”
