Ever wondered how celebs across Hollywood and Bollywood manage to keep their hair looking its best despite putting it through extremes? It’s certainly not magic, but the skilful hands of celeb stylists.
From the simplest hair care tricks that you can incorporate in your daily routine to styling products that can transform the way your hair looks, Vogue India combed through years of interviews with celeb stylists to gather their best kept hacks, and we’ve shortlisted five tips to help you up your hair game.
Keep heated tools away from damp hair
Stepping out of the shower, running late, and getting tempted to pick that blow-dryer up to save time, or perhaps the straightening iron is calling your name? We’ve all been there.
However, celeb hair stylist Daniel Bauer strongly suggests against using heat styling tools on damp hair.
“Heat styling damp hair is a guaranteed disaster. You are essentially boiling your hair, when the heat hits the water in your hair it boils, it's creating steam. This kills your hair; there is no recovery,” Bauer warns.
Detecting heat damage
Knowing that your hair is damaged and needs help is half the work done, and Bollywood celeb-favourite Amit Thakur has a simple way of detecting hair damage to prevent further woes.
“If the ends of your hair stay stiff and straight and are different from the hair closest to the roots, it’s likely due to heat damage,” Vogue quoted Thakur.
Using a heat protectant spray/serum is key, but more importantly, Thakur suggests figuring out what level of heat your hair needs. “Most people use higher temperatures on the tools when the same results can be achieved with a much lower heat setting.”
DIY hair treatments for hair growth
Celebrity hairstylist Hiral Bhatia believes that you don’t necessarily need high-end products or expensive treatments for longer, healthier locks. In fact, she has a few concoctions that are sure to help you grow your hair out.
“Onion juice mixed with a couple of drops of coconut oil or castor oil is amazing for hair growth. Leave this on for 15-20 minutes at the maximum and rinse,” Bhatia suggested.
She also recommends using fermented rice water to rinse your hair with post shampoo. “Fermented rice water not only makes the hair soft and shiny, it also promotes hair growth,” she said.
Avoid over washing your hair
This one’s an age-old mantra repeated by our elders, but if you need any more proof of how damaging washing your hair every day can be, Bauer can explain.
The stylist was quoted by Vogue saying, “Many people like to wash their hair every day so that they feel it’s clean, shiny and healthy. However, this strips the hair of the sebum layer, leaving hair raw and prone to tangles and frizz.”
Dial down the shower temperatures
Washing your hair with hot or even warm water is a complete no-go for almost all hair stylists.
Priyanka Chopra-Jonas’ favourite celeb stylist Priyanka Borkar also cautions against this, no matter how cold it may be outside.
“Avoid using hot water on hair. Even if you are shampooing with warm water, rinse off your conditioner with cool water, as it seals the cuticle and gives extra shine,” Borkar explained.
