Lady Gaga revealed what led her to channel Jo Calderone.
The Die With a Smile singer and Jo Calderone go way back. Taking a trip down memory lane, she recently discussed the meaningful impact her alter ego had on her.
During an interview Lady Gaga told Them, “That was actually kind of a big moment for me as a woman to put all the pent-up fear or anger I had about relationships into one character.”
The pop icon continued, "But Jo was an important character for me. It’s the way I explored what I was looking for in men, and also what I was maybe lacking in myself."
The Born This Way singer’s drag persona, Jo, was created in 2010, stirring confusion her fans on its debut in a Vogue Hommes Japan issue for men’s fashion.
Gaga did not acknowledge her persona straight away, leaving netizens speculating that it was her in drag. Soon after, Jo was featured in the 38-year-old’s music video for You and I, followed by a VMA performance in 2011.
Last month, Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, opened up about the future of Jo Calderone.
In a lie detector test with Vanity Fair, the Poker Face hitmaker was asked about her alter-ego, to which she responded, "Oh, this person is no longer with us.”
Gaga has also mentioned that the You and I music video was the first time she played a different character, and she is bringing back this approach in her latest album Mayhem.
Mayhem, featuring the record-breaking song Die with a Smile with Bruno Mars, is set to release on March 7.
