Lady Gaga’s iconic hit Born This Way has been a pop anthem for over a decade—but did you know she wrote it in less than 10 minutes?
During her appearance on Hot Ones with Sean Evans, the Poker Face singer reflected on how quickly she created the 2011 chart-topping song.
Evans reminded Gaga of her past comment, where she had described writing Born This Way as “immaculate conception” and said:
“You once said you wrote it in 10 [expletive] minutes.”
Gaga was amused at her own remark, laughing: “Oh my God, I said that?”
She then explained her songwriting process, describing how the song practically wrote itself: “For Born This Way and a lot of my songs, I hear it pretty quickly, and then I just have to follow it.”
“When I'm making music, I always say that I’m listening. It’s like receiving a message, which is probably why I made that really dumb comment about myself.”
Gaga also shared that while she intuitively knows when a song is complete, she believes the true judgment comes from her fans:
“Sometimes I know something’s done because that image feels whole to me, but you really don’t know if something is good until the people tell you — and they will tell you.”
The pop superstar also teased her upcoming album, Mayhem, which is set for release next month.
In a press release to People, Gaga revealed that this project represents a return to her musical roots: “The album started as me facing my fear of returning to the pop music my earliest fans loved.”
