King Charles has delivered a heartfelt message to the people of Canada, just days after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry wrapped up their Invictus Games engagements in Vancouver and Whistler.
The monarch’s message, shared on social media, celebrated the 60th anniversary of the National Flag of Canada, reinforcing his continued bond with the Commonwealth nation.
In his statement, His Majesty expressed deep admiration for Canada’s national flag, first raised in 1965, and reflected on his personal connection with the country.
"On this day in 1965, Canada's red and white maple leaf flag was raised for the very first time on Parliament Hill. Today my wife, Queen Camilla, and I join Canadians across Canada, and around the world, to commemorate an important milestone – the 60th anniversary of the Canadian flag," King Charles wrote.
He continued: "Since that time, it has become internationally recognized as a symbol of a proud, resilient, and compassionate country."
The King also reminisced about his many visits to Canada, calling them a source of pride and admiration.
"For my own part, it is a symbol that never fails to elicit a sense of pride and admiration, as I recall with the deepest affection my many Canadian visits and friendships," he added.
His message came shortly after Meghan Markle departed Vancouver, where she had been supporting Prince Harry at the launch of the 2025 Invictus Games.
Does King Charles have any power in Canada?
King Charles III is a constitutional monarch, meaning he does not "rule" Canada. However, as the country’s Head of State, he remains a key figure in Canada’s government and national identity. While his role is largely ceremonial, his presence continues to hold historical and cultural significance across the nation.
