Prince Harry is set to return to the UK with the Invictus Games in 2027, and it appears he may finally receive the backing he has long sought from his home country.
Veterans Minister Al Carns, MP for Selly Oak, Birmingham, has expressed his enthusiasm for Harry’s decision to host the games in the UK and assured that the government will fully support the initiative.
Carns, who attended this year’s Invictus Games in Vancouver, praised Prince Harry as an "amazing patron" and emphasized Birmingham’s commitment to making the 2027 event a success.
"We will get behind it, I can guarantee you. Birmingham has really good spirit, and the UK is increasingly involved and committed to delivering support to its veterans," Carns told The Telegraph.
He also shared insights into discussions about expanding the Games:
"We talked about how we can broaden out the Games from an international perspective, make it connect more into society, how we could connect it into schools and make sure people know about it from a young age."
The 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham is expected to have a "festival feel", building on the city’s experience in hosting major events like the Commonwealth Games.
"It’s going to be amazing. Birmingham has good pedigree in running big events," Carns added.
What are the Invictus Games and Prince Harry’s role?
The Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry in 2014, is a Paralympic-style sporting event for wounded, injured, or sick military personnel and veterans. The competition promotes recovery, rehabilitation, and mental resilience through sports and takes place biennially in various host cities worldwide.
