Kyle Busch has died at the age of 41 after suffering complications from a severe illness that doctors say rapidly escalated into life-threatening sepsis, his family have confirmed in a heartbreaking statement.

The two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2026, after being hospitalised earlier in the week with what was initially believed to be a severe case of pneumonia.

In a note shared by Dakota Hunter, vice president of Kyle Busch Companies, the family revealed medical evaluations concluded the infection “progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications.”

Tributes have poured in across the motorsport world, with teams, drivers and fans left stunned by the sudden loss of one of NASCAR’s most recognisable and fiercely competitive figures.

Busch had reportedly collapsed during a simulator session in the days leading up to his hospitalisation, with emergency services called after he was said to be coughing up blood and struggling to breathe.

Sources also noted he had recently been battling a sinus infection, which may have worsened under the intense physical strain of racing preparation and simulator training.

His condition deteriorated quickly, and he was later ruled out of competing in upcoming races, including major events in North Carolina.

A joint statement from NASCAR, Richard Childress Racing and the Busch family described him as a “once-in-a-generation talent” whose passion and record-breaking career left a lasting mark on the sport.

He was praised not only for his championships and record wins but also for mentoring younger drivers and building a devoted fanbase known as “Rowdy Nation.”

Busch is survived by his wife Samantha and their two children, Brexton and Lennix.

The family have asked for privacy as they mourn a loss described by many in the sport as “unthinkable” and far too soon.
