RAYE revealed the hard work that went into her latest album, This Music May Contain Hope.
The 28-year-old crooner shared how she had put her entire life of work into the record.
The Singer-songwriter and record producer strained herself to the point of breaking down.
The singer of Where Is My Husband! revealed to The Zane Lowe Show on Apple Music that the project required all that she could bring.
She went on to declare, “It’s taken every blood cell. If I wasn’t on a stage, I was pouring into this body of work."
However, the star noted, "I’m honestly exhausted mentally and physically but in a good way.”
The explained that she took over the creative control as the executive producer, writing all the lyrics and music, collaborating with orchestras, big bands and a huge number of musicians.
“It’s been a labour of absolute passion and love.” She called the album a rebellion following years of writing to commission on behalf of other performers.
"Everything had to be simple, minimal, to brief — this BPM, this length, this vibe. It was a miserable existence for me.” she said.
One of the turning points was the time she severed ties with her label after seven exhausting years.
“I’ve grown up with many cultures — my identity isn’t one thing. So how can you ask me to choose one thing? On this record I embraced maximalism… any genre I wanted to explore, I did.”
The independence came with freedom but at the same time compelled her to deal with her years of emotional trauma.
