Neil Patrick Harrison, Josh Radnor discuss on-set strain on ‘HIMYM’

Neil Patrick Harrison opened up about the tension and rift he felt between him and co-star Josh Radnor during their time on set of How I Met Your Mother.

In a new episode of How We Made Your Mother, Harrison who portrayed the over-the-top ladies' man, and he was responsible for many of the series' biggest and boldest jokes.

Radnor, however, played Ted Mosby, perennially lovesick and always searching for his true love.

Harrison admitted that he often sensed Radnor’s frustration on set "I remember often when we were filming, and I sensed frustration from you because you wanted the scene to be like a good scene and I was looking at you like, ‘Motherf---er, I'm doing spit takes.'"

He added that sometimes he wondered, “Is Josh mad at me?” and felt they were doing "different shows" despite the cast’s overall camaraderie.

Radnor who was new to the television industry at that time acknowledged the tension but attributed much of it to a blur between actor and the character.

“I think it might have been a little bit of confusion between actor and character,” admitted. “Barney was often incredibly almost dismissive of Ted, and you were so good at playing that.”

He added, “I think sometimes I felt dismissed by Neil, but I was being dismissed by Barney.”

Despite the disconnect, both actors emphasized that their contrasting energies ultimately strengthened the show. Harris noted the need for “multiple perspectives,” while Radnor praised their “weird chemistry.”

The conversation marks the first time the stars have publicly addressed the long—rumoured on-set differences.

The How I Met Your Mother was a long running CBS sitcom from (2005 – 2014), it also starred Jason Segel, Alyson Hannigan and Cobie Smulders.
