Hans Niemann says his life and professional chess career were “destroyed” by the infamous toy cheating scandal that erupted after his surprise victory over world champion Magnus Carlsen at the 2022 Sinquefield Cup.
Niemann’s comments come in an exclusive trailer for the upcoming Netflix documentary UNTOLD: Chess Mates, which revisits one of the most controversial episodes in recent chess history.
The scandal began when Niemann, then 20 and one of the rising stars of the chess world, defeated Carlsen, ending the Norwegian’s long unbeaten streak, sparking immediate suspicion.
According to People, the episode ignited wild speculation, including an unfounded claim that Niemann used a vibrating toy to receive external signals during play, a theory that spread widely online despite lacking evidence.
In the Netflix series teaser, Niemann says the aftermath of the scandal has followed him relentlessly.
“My entire life and career has been destroyed,” he says, adding that discussions about him “eventually” focus on the s** toy allegations rather than his chess achievements.
Moreover, Niemann has previously acknowledged cheating in online games early in his life but has denied using any illicit methods in official over‑the‑board competition.
As per the outlet, the controversy led to lengthy public debate in the chess community and a defamation lawsuit against Carlsen and other chess organizations, which was later dismissed by a court.
