In a revealing conversation on Friends Keep Secrets, the podcast hosted by her husband Benny Blanco, Selena Gomez opened up about the realities of living with bipolar disorder, calling her diagnosis journey “f****** complicated.”
Gomez described a long path to understanding her condition that included working with multiple therapists and attending four rehabilitation programs before she finally received a clear diagnosis.
Blanco shared that there are times Gomez experiences what he described as “moments of mania”, periods she often doesn’t recognize while they are happening and may only understand in retrospect.
According to Daily Mail, Blanco explained that addressing those episodes in real time is delicate, noting that it’s typically not helpful to try talking someone through it while they’re in the midst of an episode.
Instead, he focuses on supporting her with patience and awareness. Gomez emphasized she no longer feels shame about these moments and said greater self-awareness helps her identify and manage them more effectively.
Furthermore, the singer credited her diagnosis, made public in 2020, with giving her the freedom to better understand her emotions and behaviors.
