Bridgerton season four has come to its end, however, it left the viewers yearning for more after concluding on a cliffhanger.
Towards the end of the show, a new Lady Whistledown was introduced after Penelope (Nicola Coughan) announced that she would be stepping down from her role as the gossipmonger.
In an interview with the Entertainment Weekly, series showrunner and producer Jess Brownell revealed that introducing a new Whistledown in season four was always part of the plan.
She said that her and the co-creator Shonda Rhimes had a conversation after the end of season three to discuss what would happen after Penelope came forward.
With someone new stepping in to take the role, it also created the perfect opportunity for Brownell and Rhimes to inject a fresh layer of mystery into the series — especially since no one has ever seriously taken over the mantle of Whistledown from Penelope in Julia Quinn’s novels.
"We thought, what better way to get to create a genuine mystery with Whistledown than to have someone new take it over?" Brownell adds. "So Shonda and I have an idea about who Whistledown is and that's what we're writing toward."
However, both the creators refrained from revealing the name of new Whistedown.
Instead, they promised that they would "definitely be planting some clues over the next few seasons for people to hopefully have their own guesses" to allow the viewers to form their own guesses.
Brownells also revealed that the identity will not be disclosed in season five and that the reveal will take some time.
All four seasons of Bridgerton are now streaming on Netflix.
