Austin Butler is gearing up for his most controversial role yet and it’s already causing a stir in Hollywood.
The 34-year-old star, who earned an Oscar nomination for playing Elvis Presley, has signed on to portray disgraced cycling legend Lance Armstrong in a new biopic that promises to lift the lid on one of sport’s biggest scandals.
The film will be directed by All Quiet on the Western Front filmmaker Edward Berger, with former Netflix bigwig Scott Stuber producing.
The project has reportedly sparked a full-blown bidding war among major studios and streaming giants.
While the fallen cyclist will be involved in the film, insiders say he won’t receive a producing credit.
Deadline reports that Armstrong only agreed after being told the film would tell “everything”, warts and all.
After months of discussions, he finally signed off, opening the door for a brutally honest take on his rise, fall and doping confession.
The script is being penned by King Richard writer Zach Baylin, with Berger, Stuber and Nick Nesbit producing.
Josh Glick and Zac Frognowski will serve as executive producers.
This isn’t Armstrong’s first brush with the big screen.
Ben Foster played him in 2015’s The Program, a film made without Armstrong’s involvement.
Foster later shocked fans by admitting he took performance-enhancing drugs to prepare for the role and said the physical and mental fallout took years to recover from.
