Richard Marx is offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at how his new album After Hours came together, sharing that the project grew from a spontaneous moment at home to a fully realized homage to the Great American Songbook.

In an exclusive interview, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter described how the idea for After Hours sparked one evening while at home with his wife, former MTV host Daisy Fuentes.

Playing Frank Sinatra’s Fly Me to the Moon during a relaxed martini session, Marx began reimagining it as a slow-burn ballad and rushed to the piano to work out a fresh arrangement.

Moreover, that creative moment, and the warm response it got when performed live, helped set the tone for the album.

After Hours, Marx’s first full album since 2022, features a mix of timeless classics reinterpreted in a big-band style alongside original compositions crafted in the same vintage spirit.

According to Daily Mail, the record was recorded live in the studio with a full ensemble, a process Marx described as both intimidating and deeply rewarding.

Moreover, collaborations with music legends such as Rod Stewart, saxophonist Kenny G and trumpeter Chris Botti lend further depth to the project, while Marx says his late father’s influence as a jazz pianist and his upbringing surrounded by big-band sounds were key emotional touchstones.

Additionally, Marx also highlighted the creative support he received from Fuentes throughout the process, including co-writing one of the new songs, Magic Hour, during a beachside retreat.

After Hours is out now, and reflects Marx’s lifelong admiration for classic songwriting and live musicianship.
