Nathan Fillion says shooting the season 8 premiere of the hit ABC police drama The Rookie in Prague felt “like a James Bond movie,” as the long-running series heads overseas for the first time.
Fillion, who plays LAPD Officer John Nolan, shared details of the European shoot in an exclusive interview with People, describing the experience as cinematic and a departure from the show’s typical Los Angeles backdrop.
For the first time in the series’ history, The Rookie filmed part of its eighth season in the Czech capital, using Prague’s historic streets, squares and riverside vistas to give the show a fresh visual energy.
According to the outlet, Fillion said walking through the city in a suit, rather than his character’s police uniform, “felt very fancy” and evoked the style of a classic spy film, a comparison that delighted both cast and crew.
Co-star Jenna Dewan, who plays Bailey Nune, echoed Fillion’s enthusiasm, calling the location “special” and likening the storyline to a “second honeymoon” for their characters, following a rocky first attempt at romance on the show.
While the episode blends action with moments of suspense, comedy and banter, Dewan revealed that the couple’s planned peaceful getaway takes an unexpected turn once the plot kicks in.
Off-screen, both actors took advantage of their time in Europe, with Dewan exploring Prague’s historic sites between filming and Fillion extending his trip to enjoy the city.
The Rookie season 8 is set to premiere Tuesday, Jan. 6 on ABC, with episodes streaming later on Hulu.
